Days 9-10

Day 9 I do all the time so I'm not bothering with it. :)

Day 10 is my favorite trope.

It's kind of a tie:

Found family. All the found family. This is why I love certain ensemble shows (Leverage. Criminal Minds. CSI. Bones. House.), especially those wherein the people would deny upside down and backward that they've made their own little found family.

Soul bonding/soulmates. I'm not a 'believe in love at first sight' kind of person, but for some reason I love soul bonding fics. Especially those where it's a slow burn, or where the marks show up and the people go 'well, that can't be right.' Or other ways of turning the trope on its head while keeping it: Bonds changing as relationships change. Bonding between someone sexual and someone ace/aro. Bonds fading or constantly rebuilding.

Basically, things where people imprint themselves on each other, the kind of intimacy implied by a soul bond whether or not there's a telepathic or telempathic component.

Eliot Spencer's gifts are not in killing, but in knowing when not to kill. In knowing when a sharp word or sarcastic comment will be more helpful than a kindness. In knowing holding a knife one way cuts neatly through a potato, and held a different way cuts through a dozen Yakuza.

Eliot Spencer does not like games where you can't score on defense, because he prefers to hold the defensive position.

Eliot Spencer would as soon feed you as hit you. Or maybe both would suit.

Eliot Spencer is a family man. The phrase just doesn't mean what he figured it would when he was younger.

You know, I'm lucky in that I often get the things I really wish for in challenges and the like when I sign up for them.

Three fannish things I'd like but haven't received yet:
Meta (with gifs!) exploring the similarities between Pierce/Hydra's treatment of Bucky and Naomi/Heaven's treatment of Castiel.

John Watson competence porn. Can be John/Sherlock, John & Sherlock, John/Mary & Sherlock, John/Mary/Sherlock, John & or / Sherlock and Molly, John in Afghanistan. Just John being a competent bad-ass ("Nurse." "Nurse?!" "I'm making do.")

Nate Ford/James Sterling hate sex. I don't know why, I just know I want it.

Snowflake Challenge #4-5

Honestly, I'm skipping 4 because Yuletide just happened and I socialized/added people already.

Day 5, reccing fanworks that are not mine:

Let it Be SPN, Destiel & a little bit of very odd Sabriel, and one other pairing I'm not going to spoil because it delights me. This fanfic is based on one question: What if John Winchester, and not Mary, had died on Sam's bedroom roof. It's more than a little bit heartbreaking and there are all sorts of little canon nods and the Corgi is to die for because Corgis. But truly; it's a lovely, and I think in-character look at who the boys might be if they'd had their mom instead of their dad.

Toto, Too The Wizard of Oz (specifically The Road to Oz), I see femmeslash but it could be read as gen. This was a treat I got for Yuletide this year and it was EVERYTHING I WANTED. (Don't get me wrong, my gift fic was also EVERYTHING I WANTED). I'm reccing this one, though, over my gift because this person gets dogs and their bonds with their children. It's perfect and I love it.

Seems So Easy for Everybody Else, Sherlock, FTM Sherlock, Sherlock/Sebastian Wilkes. This fic. It breaks me. It is beautiful and heartbreaking and it is so perfect in its beautiful and heartbreaking way. Even as a cis woman, this breaks me, and I really want this Sherlock to have everything he ever wanted and to keep all he has fought so hard to have.

Snowflake Challenge Day 3

Is to set goals.

Just for the record, I'm shit at goals. They become something I can beat myself up over instead of something that encourages me to do better.

That said, though, I intend to complete a full-length non-fannish work this year. And I also intend to boost my stamina enough to hike to the top of Nevada Falls in Yosemite come April.

And yes, I know all about the Road to Hell.

I'm an SPN fan.

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life.

This one is really difficult, because so much of my life is tied up in media/pop culture/reading/music.

Probably, though, Ozma of Oz. Because there is that sense of childlike wonder in the Oz books, certainly, but also because this book in particular centered not just women but girls like me. And those girls defeated an evil Nome King not by being especially clever, but by being kind and loving and themselves (and really, what's not to like about a book where a chicken is the real hero?)

Fandom Snowflake #1

Rec three works of my own.

Always and forever closest to my heart is In For Repairs (ST:AOS, Jones[Kirk/McCoy], very much NC-17 for sex and violence and emotional disturbance). Co-written with my best friend and constant co-author shinychimera, we explore what it means to be broken but still functional. We've gotten lots of comments on how real the characters come across to people.
note: if you read this one, please take the warnings seriously; there is a LOT that can be triggery.

Last year, as a pinch hit for Yuletide, I wrote Dash Away All, (Brisco County, Jr./Rise of the Guardians, Comet & Santa, so much G-rated) which I think is a pretty good example of my solo writing. It all started because I was thinking about Comet (Brisco's horse, not the reindeer), and then the line "Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse" from A Visit From St. Nicholas sprang into my head, and fic happened.

On a very different note, and with a very different feeling, is Maybe is a Miracle (Supernatural/Captain America(MCU), Bucky & Team Free Will, PG for implied violence and Bucky's history, primarily Bucky & Castiel) This fic happened because I had a 45-minute drive between work and home and my mind has a tendency to chew through things while I'm on the road, and I was comparing Bucky's history to Cas' in my head. There are parallels to Dean, as well, but Cas was who was on my mind, and my brain said "what if" and this fic came out of that question.
